Yamaha Introduce Electric Power Steering for Motorcycles

March 31, 2022 by Team Bike India Leave a Comment

Yamaha announced recently that they have developed a prototype of an Electric Power Steering (EPS) support system for motorcycles as a rider-aid contributing to improved motorcycle stability and agility.

EPS support system on a test bike

The newly developed EPS is a technology falling under the “Transforming Mobility” (transform mobility to expand human possibilities) focus area of the company’s long-term vision of art for human possibilities. Yamaha are carrying out development of the system seeing it as a technology not only for transforming mobility for greater fun, safety, and comfort but also as one connected to resolving societal issues in uniquely Yamaha ways.

The EPS support system employs sensor technologies that differ from those in power steering systems for automobiles and other four-wheeled vehicles. Utilizing a magnetostrictive torque sensor enables the system to function as a steering damper and provide assisted steering, thereby contributing to a motorcycle’s stability, improving agility, reducing rider fatigue, and more.

Electronic Power Steering (EPS) support system

In order to further expedite their R&D in a real-world scenario, the Yamaha Factory Racing Team will contest the All Japan Motocross Championship with two YZ450FMs and a YZ250F equipped with EPS. The company plans to use the wealth of data acquired through use in the harsh environment provided by top-level motocross competition to accelerate the system’s development and refinement. Yamaha aim to equip EPS on various motorcycles in order to provide a wide range of riders with greater motorcycling fun, safety, and comfort.

However, the electronic steering damper technology being developed by Yamaha is not entirely new as Honda have been using it since 2004 on their high-end motorcycles, but its damping rates are variable and adjusted by the ECU. Yamaha have taken the concept further by adding an actuator to assist with any steering input applied to the handlebar.

TVS Raider 125 Wins the IMOTY 2022

March 10, 2022 by Glen Francis Leave a Comment

The 2022 IMOTY saw a few new members enter the jury as a new winner was crowned.

Said to be the ultimate prize of the best motorcycle in the country, the Indian Motorcycle Of The Year Award happens every year with a panel of the top-most journalists of our country evaluating the vehicles on various parameters to crown a deserving motorcycle of the year.

In order to get into the nominations of the IMOTY, the vehicle must be manufactured between 1 December 2020 and 30 November 2021 and is usually a more mass-selling model, instead of a premium or, rather, an expensive one.

This year’s competitors were quite a mix of various genres of motorcycling, here’s the list: Benelli TRK 251, Bajaj Pulsar NS125, Bajaj Pulsar F250 and N250. Honda CB200X, Royal Enfield Classic 350, TVS Raider 125 and the Yamaha FZ-X.

The motorcycles are judged on the basis of various aspects, such as price, fuel efficiency, styling, comfort, safety, performance, practicality, technical innovation, value for money, and suitability for Indian riding conditions.

With big names on the list and some very interesting motorcycles too, we’re sure the judges did have a tough time deciding on a winner, however, the TVS Raider 125 took the crown for the Indian Motorcycle of the Year 2022.

zNow that we’ve told you about the motorcycles, here’s a list of the members who make the ICOTY jury – Aspi Bhathena (Editor, Bike India), Sarmad Kadiri (Executive Editor, Bike India), Shivank Bhatt (Road Test Editor, AutoX), Rahul Ghosh (Associate Editor, Auto Today), Dipayan Dutta (Senior Special Correspondent, Auto Today), Bertrand D’Souza (Editor, OVERDRIVE), Rohit Paradkar (Asst Editor, OVERDRIVE), Sirish Chandran (Editor, Evo India), Aatish Mishra (Asst Editor, Evo India), Kartik Ware (Managing Editor, Motoring World), Janak Sorap (Features Writer, Motoring World), Vikrant Singh (Editor, Bikewale), Kranti Sambhav (Editor, Times Drive) and Abhay Verma (Editor, TURBOCHARGED)
