Clan Scout Riding Shoes Review — Protection Meets Comfort

March 2, 2025 by Joshua Varghese Leave a Comment

Clan Shoes are a brand we have been following since their inception and for a few months now, we have been testing their latest product, the Clan Scout.

Clan Scout D3O

Clan Shoes have a simple target. They want to provide a pair of riding shoes that people will wear everyday. To that effect, we believe they have succeeded. Their clientele includes both seasoned motorcyclists who have used top-end riding boots and absolute beginners looking to invest in value-for-money riding gear. We will start with how the Scout riding shoes have made an impact in my daily life as a motorcycle journalist.

Let me begin by saying that purpose-built riding boots offer the best protection. Simply because they were designed for that singular function, no surprises there. That said, they are not the easiest footwear to use everyday because they are usually bulky and somewhat restrictive in movement. In simple terms, if one wanted to spend all day in them walking, sitting at a desk or climbing stairs, one cannot expect sneaker-level comfort from riding boots.

For me, that is where the Clan Scout riding shoes fit right in. In addition to providing the levels of protection necessary for urban use, they are also comfortable enough to be my first choice when leaving the house to ride a motorcycle. When I travel for testing motorcycles, all of my riding gear is usually packed away into a suitcase but I prefer wearing the Scouts through the airport because they are stylish and comfortable. Plus, it helps me reduce the weight of my luggage. Always a good thing.

Unlike its predecessors, both variants of the Scout are waterproof and we highly recommend going for the D3O option because those are the ones we have been using and they are superior in terms of protection. Both variants of the Scout get thermoformed protective elements for the toe and heel and abrasion-resistant microfibre leather. While D3O armour is used to protect the ankles in the top version, the standard model has to make do with moulded TPU discs. Clan have thoughtfully included other details such as high visibility reflectors and elastic lace holders.

Clan claim that the Scout riding shoes use abrasion-resistant microfibre leather for the upper material and a rubberised TPR sole. The interior of the shoes are equipped with a breathable mesh liner and a cushioned EVA foam insole.

When we announced on social media that we were using the Clan Scouts, some of you reached out to us with concerns about the risks associated with laces. While we agree that laces are not the best solution for riding shoes, we must also say that during our time with the Scouts we never had an instance of the laces getting caught in the shifter or anywhere else on the motorcycle. The laces are placed fairly high on the shoes and they are just the right length which reduces the likelihood of them getting entangled with anything on the motorcycle. When we questioned Clan about this, their response was positive. They confirmed that they decided to use laces on purpose because it kept the costs down and made the shoes more accessible while also being easier to maintain.

At Rs 5,799, we feel the Clan Scout D3O riding shoes offer immense value and at the end of almost six months, they look as good as they were on the first day. It is easy to recommend this one to motorcyclists.
