For a lot of us here in India, scooters have been the gateway to the magical world of biking — the mythical wardrobe that leads to Narnia, the first step into the discovery of what would eventually become a way of life. They’re the life-blood of the middle class, and in small cities with tiny, pothole-ridden roads, scooters are pretty much the only way to get around in a hurry.
So when the prospect of this shoot-out was laid on the table, I couldn’t help but get a little nostalgic about my younger days. Awash with the glow of starry-eyed reminiscence, I just had to volunteer for this gig, and, boy, was it worth it! While riding these four distinct scooters — the Honda Activa 3G, Mahindra Gusto, Suzuki Let’s, and TVS Scooty Zest — I realised that despite the fact that there is one overall winner; each bike is a perfect fit for a certain section of the Indian citizenry. Before I give any more spoilers away, let’s get down to it.
