The founders of Ather Energy set out to create a performance scooter with handling to match and this they achieved with the 450 series. It packed a bunch of thoughtful features to make life easier on a day-to-day basis. However, “performance” is a niche market in India, so Ather decided to apply their know-how to creating their version of the ultimate family scooter and they called it the Rizta. We think this is a stylised version of the Urdu word rishta, which means “relation”. Can the family scooter become a family member? We went to Nandi Hills in Bengaluru to find out.

The Ather Rizta, the Bengaluru-based EV startup’s newest offering, is targeted at families rather than performance enthusiasts unlike their previous 450 series. To that effect, Ather have imbued it with an array of thoughtful features and accessories to make it a compelling offering in the family scooter market, regardless of the powertrain (electric or petrol). The prices start at Rs 1.10 lakh for the Rizta S, going up to Rs 1.25 lakh for the Rizta Z (2.9 kWh) and Rs 30,000 more for the larger 3.7-kWh battery version of the Rizta Z (all ex-showroom).
