Over the past few months, we have been using the Raida Rover riding jacket and riding pants. During this time, it has been our first choice for all ADV shoots. After using it in the summer of Pune and the extreme conditions in Leh, here is what we have to say about this kit.
When one picks up the jacket, it is clear that it is a not the lightest riding gear in the market but it is not heavy enough to be bothersome either. In fact, we are ready to overlook the weight because it comes equipped with CE Level Two armour from Safe-Tech all around; which includes shoulder elbow, back and chest units. Chest armour as standard is not common in this price range so we appreciate Raida’s gesture in offering them at no extra cost.
This is not a mesh jacket and consequently, not as breathable but certainly not uncomfortable. With ample ventilation available, it was easy to use in the summer of Pune and it also kept me warm in the single-digit temperatures of Wari La. It is made of 600D PU-coated polyester fabric and also has Cordura fabric at the shoulders and elbows for additional abrasion resistance. Other small things that deserve appreciation include the thoughtful addition of soft texture at the collar and sleeves which add to the product’s usability. The jacket also has water-resistant chest pockets and the space for a hydration bladder in the back. All of this at a price of Rs 9,499 strikes us as a good deal because the construction and quality are not too far from some international brands that we have used in the past. Of course, to make full use of its potential, one should also consider purchasing the Rover riding pants because the two of them can be zipped together as a set. By the way, Raida also supply a rain jacket and a thermal layer as part of the kit. The former has proven to be particularly useful since the monsoon began.
The Rover pants are made from the same material as the jacket and are largely similar in terms of construction. There are two key differences; no Cordura fabric reinforcement and the tail bone armour is a soft-padded unit unlike the Safe-Tech CE Level Two armour at the knee and the hip. They fit well and are comfortable to wear which gave us all-day usability. There is a cargo pocket on either side which adds to the pants’ ease of use because one can put the phone away quickly without having to fiddle with a zipper. It is also worth noting that Raida are offering a thermal base layer that goes under the pants and a rain liner that goes over it. All of this for a price of Rs 6,999 is too good a deal to ignore.
For a combined cost of Rs 16,498, one is getting a full textile suit that has proved its usefulness in tropical, cold and rainy weather.
