Honda developing a 100 percent indigenous two-wheeler for India

June 14, 2013 by Aninda Sardar 1 Comment

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) is developing a indigenous two-wheeler in India, part of the game plan to achieve their goal of clenching the top slot in the Indian market. The model is being developed by a joint team of about 100 engineers from Honda Research & Development India (HRID) and HMSI at Manesar, with eyes clearly fixed at the number one position in the market.

HMSI, CEO and President, Keita Muramatsu, confirmed to reporters during the recent unveiling of Activa-i that ‘there is work going on to produce a 100 per cent locally developed product in India’. Earlier this year, the Japanese auto major inaugurated its technical centre at Manesar as part of strategy to spearhead its global innovation from India. What makes this facility unique is that it combines design, engineering, purchasing and quality control under one roof, so that it ‘advances local development of higher quality product at low cost’. Though the company refrained from disclosing whether the new product would be a scooter or motorcycle, for now we just know that the new two-wheeler will be introduced in the market within a year.
