Yamaha unveil the MT-09

June 12, 2013 by Aninda Sardar Leave a Comment

Last week, we brought you news of Yamaha’s teaser video titled, “The dark side of Japan”.

The motorcycle featured in the commercial has now broken cover in the form of the all-new 800cc naked MT-09. Specifically designed for the European Market, The MT-09 has been described by the head honchos of Yamaha as one of their most important new offering globally.

The all new 847cc mill makes 116.5 PS of peak power and 85.41 Nm of peak torque, with a ‘ride by wire’ throttle and variable power modes as part of standard equipment. Other aspects include an all new set of radial brakes, 10-spoke wheels and a horizontally mounted shock, while certain other technical aspects have still not yet been disclosed. The MT-09 weights almost 188 kg and houses a 14-litre fuel tank.

The MT-09 ushers in an all new design philosophy of the tri-fork brand which is seen in their TVC. Yamaha are busy trying to display this machine as ‘fun’ and ‘cool’ – it’s not often you see wheelies in a promotional video from a Japanese manufacturer. With the MT-09’s upright riding position, distinctive styling, and a hugely attractive price tag of just £6799 (INR 6.2 lakh), it just might be the perfect foil to its competitors. Yamaha India should also think about getting this radical motorcycle to our shores as it is perfectly apt for the Indian rider looking for a practical naked-sports bike.
