JK Tyre and Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) collaborated with the Ministry of Roads, Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and the Delhi Police, to organise a ‘Walk for Safety’ an initiative to promote road safety and better traffic habits. The theme for this year’s road safety week is ‘ Road Safety – Time for Action’.
The ‘Walk for Safety’ was led by Minister of MoRTH, Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Home Affairs, Rajnath Singh, Commissioner of Police and various other senior police officials. NCC cadets and city based NGO volunteers also participated in the road safety walk which started at India Gate and ended at Shastri Bhavan.
The Road Safety Week is organised every year during January, and this time it’s being held from the 11th to the 17th of January. The week-long event will educate people on better driving habits, road safety measures and the importance of following traffic rules.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister of MoRTH, Nitin Gadkari said, “In our country every year 5 lakh accidents take place, nearly 3 lakh people get injured and 1.5 lakh people lose their lives in road accidents. Our responsibility is to save the life of these people. We shall cover all the accidental spots and spend 11,000 crore in the next 5 years to improve the same.”
Also commenting on the occasion, Minister of Home Affairs, Rajnath Singh said, “There is a need for an authority or a board which ensures and monitors road safety. Road safety is not just the responsibility of the government even the stakeholders have to fulfill their designated duties, and then only we would be able to ensure the better road safety system.”
