Yes, the rumours were true, the entire 400-cc line-up from Triumph Motorcycle India is now powered by the 350-cc version of the TR Series engine.

It certainly wasn’t a surprise to us, but to many, it may come across as a shock. Still, it’s true: Triumph Motorcycle India has gone ahead and updated its 400 line-up for 2026, equipping the entire range with the new 349-cc TR Series engine that produces less power and torque than the 398-cc motor. Last year, in September, the GST Council implemented GST 2.0, a revision to the tax policy that saw every two-wheeler above 350-cc attract a new GST rate of 40 percent. This meant that Triumph Motorcycles’ entire range was now being taxed at the new rate. However, Triumph, along with its local partner Bajaj Auto, decided to absorb the hike rather than pass it on to customers. This was till 6 April 2026. Today, Triumph announced it has phased out the 398.15-cc TR Series engine from the Indian market and replaced it with the new 349-cc TR Series engine.
The new engine remains an oversquare engine, just like before; however, Triumph engineers have reduced the stroke from 64mm to 56.1mm, a reduction of 7.9mm. However, the internals, such as the crankshaft, balancer shaft, connecting rod, and even the intake, have been revised to retain the character of the older engine while improving the new engine’s refinement. Triumph has also played around with the gearing to give the bike similar acceleration, as the new engine is 0.1 seconds slower from 0-60km/h and 0.6 seconds slower from 0-100km/h. The 349-cc engine now produces 2-3-hp less across the range and a consistent 5.5Nm less across the range as compared to the 398.15-cc engine.
The new Triumph 400 range consists of the following
- Speed T4 – ₹1.95 lakh
- Speed 400 – ₹2.32 lakh
- Scrambler 400 – ₹2.59 lakh
- Thruxton 400 – ₹2.65 lakh
- Scrambler 400 XC – ₹2.89 lakh
Since these prices are not dramatically less than the earlier models, one has to remember that Triumph has absorb the GST hike since September 2025. However, if the new GST rate would have been passed on to customers, the difference between the current and earlier prices would be roughly ₹40,000. So, the new Triumph 400 line-up actually a great value for money deal.
